Synopsis Tafonomia y paleoecologia de úrsidos cuaternarios cantábricos
Los restos óseos de los extintos osos cavernarios Ursus spelaeus abundan en sedimentos pleistocenos en cuevas en toda Europa. Aunque en general se cree que eran principalmente vegetívoros, sus restos aparecen frecuentemente carroñeados. Se ha sugerido que estas modificaciones fueron producidas por lobos, hienas y otros carnívoros, que no siempre están presentes en los yacimientos. Aquí analizamos las modificaciones superficiales producidas por carnívoros en varios yacimientos de osos pardos y cavernarios en la Cornisa Cantábrica. En algunos de estos yacimientos tan sólo hay restos de osos cavernarios mientras que en otros se han encontrado además los de lobos y hienas. Los modelos de carroñeo observados en ambos tipos de yacimiento son marcadamente distintos, sugiriendo que los osos cavernarios son los principales agentes responsables por el carroñeo observado en sus yacimientos, al que se yuxtapone además el de otros carnívoros cuando éstos están presentes. Los osos cavernarios, por lo tanto, deben ser considerados una especie omnívora con una estrategia de carroñeo estandarizada e identificable. El resultado del análisis de microdesgaste dental es consistente con estos resultados y sugiere además que los osos cavernarios no consumían tubérculos como se pensaba anteriormente. Finalmente, el estudio sistemático de las enfermedades presentes en sus huesos sugiere que mientras que algunas poblaciones de osos cavernarios sufrieron de enfermedades infecciosas, éstas no parecen estar relacionadas con su extinción.
