MAGIA, pieza teatral que Chesterton escribió a partir de un relato que hoy anda perdido, se estrenó en noviembre de 1913 en el Little Theatre de Londres. La obra entonces alcanzó las 165 representaciones. Bernard Shaw fue sin duda el principal impulsor para que Chesterton se decidiera a escribir teatro y fue quien posteriormente lo elogió hasta el punto de situar a su amigo dentro de la tradición prestigiosa de Shakespeare. En Magia, en palabras de Felipe Benítez Reyes, encontramos a un Chesterton en toda la pureza de su método: un arranque misterioso, el desenmascaramiento, digamos, de ese falso misterio, una situación trivial, y de repente, el ascenso a un mundo especulativo, abstracto y paradójico en el que se enredan los dogmas y las dudas, la esencia y la apariencia, lo real y lo extraordinario, de modo que la trama se aleja de la linealidad y deriva en espiral, con todas las asimetrías de un discurso que crece en torno a sí mismo satisfecho de sí mismo, orgulloso de su poder. Desde el principio de la obra las palabras comienzan a tejer una tela de araña, territorio verbal, donde van quedando atrapados los sofismas, las tergiversaciones y los sinsentidos, los axiomas paradójicos, todo lo que siempre y sólo es ya propio y único de Chesterton.
