Considerado uno de los tres "nuevos contractualistas" junto a Robert Nozick y John Rawls, James Buchanan, Premio Nobel de Economía en 1986, ha visto reducida su influencia en nuestro idioma en razón de apropiaciones ideológicas de un pensamiento cuya actualidad es tan vigorosa como lo son sus alcances. Si bien la literatura especializada ha señalado a Buchanan como el heredero de Hobbes en la filosofía contractualista -en tanto Nozick estaría en las huellas de Locke y Rawls en las de Kant-, las lecturas más sutiles sitúan su obra en una esfera kantiana, ya que su preocupación ética y normativa es el respeto a la autonomía del sujeto, preocupación de matriz radicalmente kantiana. 'Los límites de la libertad' es una obra fundamental en el recorrido teórico de Buchanan. En ella, el pensamiento del autor se aparta de los diagnósticos positivos, que caracterizaron su trabajo previo, para centrarse en cuestiones de índole normativa cuyo eje es una indagación acerca de cómo deben ordenarse los asuntos políticos a fin de garantizar mejores resultados sociales. "Como han hecho tantos antes que yo -escribe el autor-, examino las bases para una sociedad de hombres y mujeres que quieren ser libres pero que reconocen los límites inherentes que la interdependencia social impone sobre ellos.
