A las 14.18 del 31 de mayo de 1916, en aguas del mar del Norte, el crucero inglés Galatea izó la señal de banderas «enemigo a la vista». Diez minutos después empezó la batalla naval más grande de la historia, la última en que la aviación no tuvo ningún papel. Frente a las costas de la península de Jutlandia, 16 acorazados y 5 cruceros de batalla alemanes con sus 80 buques de escolta se enfrentaron a 151 unidades inglesas, con 28 acorazados y 9 cruceros. El resultado de la batalla, que se prolongó hasta la mañana siguiente, fue incierto. Los ingleses, aunque sufrieron pérdidas más graves (murieron trágicamente 6.094, entre oficiales y marinería y perdieron varios de sus buques más prestigiosos, como el Queen Mary y el Invincible), siguieron dominando los mares, y los alemanes (con 2.551 bajas) no intentaron más salidas con su flota durante el resto de la guerra. Sergio Valzania cuenta por primera vez de manera detallada y sugerente un momento crucial de la historia naval militar. Sigue los movimientos del Lützow, el Iron Duke, el Lion y el Friedrich der Grosse, nos desvela las estrategias de los almirantes (como el agresivo Reinhard Scheer y el quizá demasiado prudente John Jellicoe), las historias personales de muchos de los hombres que combatieron en esa legendaria batalla y revela los motivos políticos que estaban detrás de una de las batallas más importantes de la Gran Guerra. Pero el autor, además de narrar hora a hora el trágico enfrentamiento de la Grand Fleet con la Hochseeflotte, reconstruye también los acontecimientos que, tras el armisticio de 1918, condujeron al internamiento de toda la flota alemana en Scapa Flow, a su autohundimiento en junio de 1919 por orden del contralmirante Ludwig von Reuter y, en las décadas siguientes, a la larga y difícil recuperación de los pecios con técnicas tan complicadas como espectaculares. Una batalla legendaria y épica, que además nos ayuda a entender muchas claves de la primera guerra mundial.
