El que no exista ninguna prueba convincente de que el todopoderoso Manuel Godoy fuese el amante de la reina María Luisa de Borbón-Parma, -madre del futuro Fernando VII-, indica la persistente tergiversación que se ha hecho de este personaje, crucial para el entendimiento de la historia contemporánea española. Los rumores sobre aquellos supuestos amores, en buena parte difundidos por el propio Príncipe de Asturias, y que fueron tomados como ciertos por la historiografía del siglo XIX, respondieron a una campaña orquestada por altos estamentos de la nobleza. Una campaña un tanto chusca que encubrió el verdadero sentido del Motín de Aranjuez, concebido como un golpe de estado que logró la caída -y casi la muerte de Godoy-, y que Carlos IV abdicase de sus derechos en su heredero, en un momento en que las tropas napoleónicas atravesaban España. Lo cierto es que el joven príncipe Fernando odió a Godoy, que conspiró contra su padre, que solicitó el apoyo de Napoleón y que, para que este le reconociera como rey, fue a " recibirlo " a... Bayona. Allí, debió devolver la Corona de España a su padre, quien a su vez la entregó a la familia Bonaparte. Mientras los españoles luchaban fieramente contra los experimentados ejércitos imperiales en nombre del " deseado " rey Fernando, este felicitaba a José Bonaparte, y pedía a Napoleón que lo tomase por hijo adoptivo. Su larga ausencia valió para que las Cortes de Cádiz aprobasen la Constitución de 1812, que él abolió de inmediato a su vuelta a España, restableciendo la Inquisición, persiguiendo a los liberales y exiliando a los " afrancesados " . En 1820 hubo de seguir la " senda constitucional " , hasta que tres años después consiguió que los cien mil hijos de San Luis lo repusiesen en todos sus poderes. Luego vino la llamada década ominosa en la que, pese al oscurantismo que impuso, se le sublevaron los " apostólicos " . Por si fuera poco, hubo un pleito dinástico, y un día después de su muerte comenzó la primera -y feroz- guerra carlista.
