A finales del siglo XV, muchos de los judíos expulsados de España se instalaron en Marruecos, y en Fez formaron una comunidad notablemente numerosa, de gran vitalidad. Diversas familias judías adquirieron a lo largo del siglo XVI un papel prominente en la vida pública de su nuevo país. Samuel Pallache fue uno de estos judíos de origen hispano que, a principios del siglo XVII sirvió al sultán de Marruecos como agente diplomático y comercial con Holanda. Pero antes, había intentado instalarse en España para lo cual estaba dispuesto a convertirse al catolicismo; para probar su sinceridad ejerció de espía en favor de la Corte española. A lo largo de su vida Pallache fue comerciante de armas, contrabandista, agente doble, espía, moviéndose entre Marruecos, España y Portugal, los Países Bajos e Inglaterra, donde fue detenido y juzgado por pirata. Al examinar la vida de Samuel Pallache y de los miembros de su familia, los autores atienden a diversos aspectos del papel de la diáspora sefardí en el mundo mediterráneo y en la creación de la comunidad de Amsterdam. La identidad religiosa de Pallache y su familia, cambiante y aparentemente ambigua, el empleo que de ellos hicieron las autoridades de los países en los que vivieron y que hicieron uso de su aparente falta de lealtad, constituyen aspectos fascinantes. El estudio está basado en una cuidadosa búsqueda de archivo en España, Portugal y Holanda. El mundo de Pallache es en realidad un micocosmos de la sociedad altomoderna, un mundo mucho más interconectado, cosmopolita y fluido de lo que se suele pensar. La historia de los Pallache muestra las conexiones de Marruecos con la Europa protestante y con la católica, así como con el comercio mediterráno y el atlántico. La historia de Pallache y de su familia es a la vez excepcional y representativa de estas comunidades judías viviendo entre dos continentes y tres fes religiosas y de los modos en que se adaptaron o sacaron partido a su situación.Gerard A. CSIC, 1997.Nacido en Fez de una familia judía de origen hispánico, Samuel Pallache fue agente comercial y diplomático del sultán marraquí Muley Zidan en los Países Bajos hasta su muerte en Amsterdam en 1616. Pero antes, y al mismo tiempo, fue también agente en España donde intentó instalarse y traer a su familia, y a lo largo de su vida ejerció de espía, agente doble, comerciante, corsario... El relato de su vida en la frontera entre varios mundos es sumamente evocador de toda una época y en particular de la suerte de los grupos expulsados de la Península Ibérica, judíos pero también moriscos, y de sus conexiones en sus nuevos lugares de vida: Fez y Amsterdam, pero también Madrid, Lisboa, Estambul. Las estrategias de que se valieron para salir adelante en circunstancias muy adversas, el uso que hicieron de sus diversos ingredientes culturales, de sus identidades fluctuantes, constituye uno de los fenómenos más fascinantes del mundo del Barroco.
